Home and Garden

30Garden Decor is an interesting decoration topic.

The garden is an addition of our home, and we should invest some time thinking and designing this special place were we will spend some time with our families and friends.

If your house is very small, also will be your garden, so take your time to consider: space distribution, accessories to include, plants, sizes, etc. All this elements should be a perfect match: small garden goes with small plants. But always you can use one big element.

If you do not have a big garden, we recommend you not to think about paths. The use of a horizontal layout will help you to give your garden a feeling of more space.

You can think of a garden designed with different levels. This fools the eye and gives the impression of a larger space. You can use the existing landscape with the new design, so your garden feels like a complement of the existing nature.
It is always a good tip to mix big plants with smaller ones in your garden decoration.

Fast growing rate plants should be avoided in a small garden. If you are going to use bright colors, you should use them right at the entryway of your garden. At the end of the garden you can use dark colors. These create a depth effect as if they vanish.

Another tip to give the impression of a bigger garden, you can use plants with large green stuff at the entrance, and the plants with smaller leaves at the end. You could use big and small plants combine, not necessarily put them aside, so you can break monotony in your garden decoration. To work on the fences and walls, it is recommended even if you have a small garden, the use of climbing plants, so you can cover the walls and also give your garden a sense of no limits.

29Birds are beautiful creatures that will add charm to any garden. One of the most popular birds is the blue bird. Unfortunately, their number has decreased significantly in the United States within the last decade.

The main reason of this decline is the increased use of pesticide, climate change, and reduced tree number. Therefore, if you put a blue bird house in the garden, you are doing a lot of favors for these beautiful birds.

Finding the right spot to place a blue bird house

It is important to find the right spot to place this house otherwise blue birds are not willing to use the space. There are many factors that you should consider in this regard. First is that the blue bird house should deter other creatures like mice and snakes that are very dangerous for blue birds. Blue birds are bigger than sparrows and you need to make sure that the entrance hole and the space inside the house are sufficient to accommodate medium sized birds.

You should put the bird house high from the ground. Four to six feet is the ideal height to place it. Furthermore, if you plan to have more than one, then you should space them around fifty yards apart. If the distance is too close, you may promote fighting between blue birds.

If you live in the northern hemisphere, it is a good idea to face the bird house to the south or southeast. It is better to have trees, shrubs, wires, or fences within twenty-five to one hundred feet radius from the house. Blue birds can use these structures to perch and they also can help young birds during their first flights. The spot where you place the blue bird home should not be a busy area. If many people and pets pass through the area, they will frighten the blue birds.

28Although making architectural news today, the atrium house dates back to the Romans, who found a retreat from hot summers in the central courtyard of their homes to the atrium. Today's atrium house differs greatly in many ways from its Roman antecedents. But, like those ancient dwellings, it offers a private garden world to those who dwell in crowded urban and suburban centers.

In all but very warm climates, the modern atrium is ordinarily roofed and lighted by skylights, clerestory windows, or a plastic bubble. Each of these can provide for ventilation during warm weather, with vents that can be opened when necessary.

The atrium need not be placed at the exact center of the house. However, it should be positioned so that the main living rooms can share in the delights of a garden that winter cannot touch, a constantly green vista in all the months of the year.

Plants Suited To The Atrium

More than in other forms of indoor gardens, plantings of an atrium should be chosen with due consideration for local climate. In warm regions, you can grow almost anything in an atrium that will grow outdoors. On the other hand, in colder growing zones, the atrium would, in all likelihood, be operated as a cool greenhouse (night temperature in the 50s, day temperatures in the 60s), thus ruling out heat lovers such as the amaryllis, and slowing down growth of house plants preferring warmer house temperatures.

But choices are still vast. Such broadleaf evergreens as camellias, azaleas, and gardenias make excellent choices, and all can be kept to desirable heights with pruning. Grass is not a good choice for ground cover, since it requires mowing. But periwinkle, pachysandra, ajuga, dichondra, ivy, and many others make a green carpet that takes little attention other than watering.

A good-looking, minimum-care, atrium garden is easy to grow if the gardener relies on smaller shrubs and trees (not deciduous varieties, which require a period of cold and dormancy), ground cover, and foliage plants. As with outdoor gardens, it is easy to have splashes of seasonal color with container-grown flowering plants that are easy to lift and replace when period of bloom has ended.

Simplify watering chores a great deal by adding a water outlet to which a garden hose can be connected. An atrium garden also needs floor drains for excess water. A path of brick, flagstone, or gravel offers easy access to all of the planted areas.

27A front garden is an important part of a house. Colorful plants in the garden make the house look beautiful. A garden can also be used as a place to have recreation with your family. However, people with a small house seemingly have problems in designing a front garden. If you think that there is no way to have a garden in your small house, we have some tips to make it.

What you need to do for the first time is to take a paper and a pencil. Draw a sketch of a garden for an empty area of your house. Make a plan of the location of the driveway and walkway which leads to the front door. It is important to fix the permanent things firstly.

Next, make some list of flowers, trees, and any other plants that you will place in your garden. You can pick out a small tree, such as a small palm tree. Do not plant more than one tree to avoid the crowd in your small garden. You can also add some herbs as the border of the garden area. Sometimes, people plant them in the front part of the garden to substitute the fence.

Besides, don't forget to give enough space for seating area so that you can enjoy the beauty of your garden with your family. You can add a small wood bench placed in your garden. It is suggested that you put it at the garden area which is close to the front door. You may plant some flowers surrounding the seating area. Remember to create a path from the seating area to the front door so that your steps won't damage the grass. You can use paving stones.

Speaking on plants, you can start with the tree. Make sure that you place it at the farthest area from the entryway. Also, you have to know where you should put the tree before planting it. Then, as a balance with the tree, you can plant some shrubs in the opposite side of the tree. If you put the tree on the left side, it is better for you to plant the herbs on the right side. To make it perfect, add some herbs along the pathway leading to the front door. Keep them low-growing so that they won't make your garden look crowded.
